Deutsch A1 – Lektion 1: Begrüßungen und Verabschiedungen
In this lesson we will learn about some common German greetings when meeting someone or when saying goodbyes. We will learn about both formal greetings (greetings used in formal situations or with people who are unknown or senior) and informal greetings (used amongst friends and family).

Learning Goals:

Ich kann mich verabschieden. (I can say goodbye.)
We will understand sentence structure in more detail in a later chapter, but let us get a basic sense of the sentence structures used here.
In most German sentences, the verb comes at the second position. When there are two verbs in a sentence, the conjugated verb comes in the second position and the unconjugated verb comes at the end of the sentence.
In the sentence “Ich kann andere begrüßen”, “kann” (can) is the conjugated verb and comes at the second position. Thus the unconjugated verb “begrüßen” (greet) comes at the end.
Similarly, in the sentence “Ich kann mich verabschieden”, kann is the conjugated verb and comes at the second position. The unconjugated verb “verabschieden” (say goodbye) comes at the end.
Section 2: Begrüßungen und Verabschiedungen
Begrüßungen (Greetings)
1. Hallo
Hallo (Hello)
Hallo is a common form of greeting used in Germany. Its meaning is the same as the English greeting hello.
2. Guten Tag!
Guten Tag! (Good day!)
Guten Tag can be used any time of the day. It is another common form of greeting, but is more formal than Hallo.
3. Guten Morgen!
Guten Morgen! (Good morning!)
It is used in the morning, particularly before 10:00 AM.
4. Guten Abend!
Guten Abend! (Good evening!)
It is used in the evening, especially after 6:00 PM. Guten Abend is used till late evenings, even at night as a form of greeting.
Verabschiedungen (Farewells)
1. Gute Nacht!
Gute Nacht! (Good night!)
It is used before going to bed.
2. Tschüs! or Tschüss!
Tschüs! (Bye!)
Tschüs is commonly used to say bye, and is used mostly in informal situations.
3. Auf Wiedersehen!
Auf Wiedersehen! (Goodbye!)
Commonly used, mostly in formal situations.
4. Auf Wiederhören!
Auf Wiederhören! (Goodbye!)
Auf Wiederhören means the same as Auf Wiedersehen, but used when you are speaking to someone on the phone.
5. Bis bald!
Bis bald! (See you soon / until soon).
6. Bis später!
Bis später! (See you later / until later).
7. Bis dann!
Bis dann! (Until then / till then).
